Alicante: top 3 places to visit

1. Castle of Santa Barbara
This castle, originally from the 9th century, was used as a prison up to 1962. Only after, the castle was released to the public. You can go to this castle by foot and climb the mountain; however, you can also use of the two elevators, accessible by entering the pedestrian tunnel at the Calle Jovellanos. A visit to the castle is best to be combined with the district of Santa Cruz El Bario. Because this district is situated against the hillside of the mountain Benancantil, you can combine a visit with the fore mentioned castle of Santa Barbara. This district contains a lot of small streets, each one different than the other.

2. Casco Antiguo
The old city centre (Casco Antiguo) is only a small part of the city of Alicante. There are multiple sights that can be found here. During a walk in the old centre, you will see the Basílica Santa Bárbara, Palacio Maisonnave, Teatro Principal, Plaza Ayuntamiento and the Mercado Princpial. You will also encounter different lovely squares. Perfect locations to find a terrace for a small break.

3. The city centre of Alicante and playa del Postiguet
Visiting Alicante in summer also implies a relaxing time at the beach. The 900m long Playa del Postiguet is the perfect place for this. Besides lying on the beach, you can also play beach volleyball or go for a nice swim in the see. You don't like lying on the beach? Then you can also stroll on the boulevard Esplanada de España. This boulevard goes all the way from the harbour to the Canalejas Park. The boulevard is right next to the city mall "Panoramis". This city mall is situated next to the sea, close to the harbour. You can see Panoramis from a large distance, because it also includes an adventure park. In addition, you can also find different restaurants and bars. We suggest you to visit the restaurants in the city centre (suggestions can be found in attachment). Do not hesitate to ask for some suggestions at the reception.

On land, at sea…

A daytrip to the pirate island of "La Tabarca"
Visitors have about 6 hours to visit the island before returning and even though Tabarca is small, there is more than enough to see and experience. The feeling to be surrounded by the see is very relaxing and you also have a view on the city of Alicante 22km further, from where the boats to Tabarca leave.

Start with a walk to the lighthouse. Here you have the chance to see a couple of rare birds. These birds settle on the rocky coast line, next to the road. Enjoy the view over the Mediterranean Sea from the lighthouse and the rough vegetation surrounding it. After this, you can return to the village using the same road and visit the baroque church. Walk passed the wall to the other side.

Because of the military origin, the village itself has a square form, with only a couple of streets, surrounded by old fisherman's houses. In addition, there is a modern luxury hotel that once was the house of the governor and of course, there are plenty of nice fish restaurants. You can stroll through the narrow streets and pause at one of the pirate bars or restaurants to taste a local specialty: caldero, a delicious fish stew dish.

Walking:
Whether is an evening walk along the coast or an active mountain climb, the region has a lot to offer.

The area of Cabeço d'oro provides three options for walking. There are two stops, one of them after a walk of about 1.5hour (we call this the half way stop) and another one after 2.5hours walking. This last stop is on the top of Cabeço. In case of beautiful weather, the view is breathtaking. We advise to combine this with the Coves del Canelobre.

Diving/Snorkeling:
Diving is possible. We usually work together with Paddi Santa Pola. Best is to contact them on time. This company is multilingual. Santa Pola Dive Academy Marina Miramar, Puerto Deportivo 2, Local 3, 03130 Santa Pola, Alicante, Spain.

To snorkel, there are different possibilities. We will list them here (listed according to distance)
